Business Challenge:
Cajamar is a mid-sized financial institution operating in a highly competitive sector of the banking market. The continual growth of the bank, the constant expansion of its personal banking activity, and the need to reduce its transformation and distribution costs, led Cajamar to consider its future technological needs starting with an upgrade of its information systems. Historically, the bank's products were developed mainly on the back-end systems so that each channel required a specific application. This decentralised approach made developing new banking products expensive because it was impossible to leverage them, or implement them in the same way, across channels. Another problem with the previous system was that it didn't offer an integrated view of customer data across all channels, nor was it possible to understand the behaviour of the customers in their interactions with Cajamar.

Solution
Cajamar realised it needed to use technology more effectively to deal with customers across multiple channels — including face-to-face, voice calls, text messaging, Web access and others — and respond quickly to customer demands. For the multi-channel platform project, from a purely technological perspective, Cajamar's decided to move towards a standard J2EE development environment. This had a strong bearing on the selection of systems for the new multi-channel platform— they needed to offer optimum integration. Cajamar selected BEA WebLogic Server 8.1, BEA WebLogic JRockit™ 8.1, BEA WebLogic Integration 8.1, four servers with the Intel® Xeon™ processor MP and an operating environment based on Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 2.1.

Results
The choice of BEA WebLogic Server® was based mainly on its transparent connectivity with BEA Tuxedo®, the transactional monitor used by Cajamar, and on its full compliance with Java standards. Moreover, BEA WebLogic JRockit, combined with Linux, was the Java virtual machine that best leveraged the system resources. Finally, BEA WebLogic® Integration provides a seamless production environment for integration specialists and application developers, with a unified platform for building and managing end-to-end processes and applications. This approach achieves maximum re-utilisation of technological resources while reducing the cost and time needed for developing new channels. It also simplifies integration of new channels with back-end systems.
