Business Challenge

CartaSi S.p.A issues and manages payment cards and provides transaction negotiation services on behalf of customer banks. In the existing architecture, the introduction of new services required the creation of new interfaces or extensive modification of those in place. It also entailed the rationalization of the way back-ends were organized and used. This meant building up assets of services that were shared in order to reduce costs and speed the development of new applications.

Solution

The SOA initiative is closely tied to the institutional business activities of CartaSi, and comprises a Services Mediation Layer, consisting of BEA AquaLogic Service Bus, on which the shared services are published. This layer interacts with the front-ends dedicated to users through portals based on BEA AquaLogic User Interaction platform. BEA WebLogic Server Process Edition is used for the creation and management of shared services.

Results

The release of the first portal, dedicated to 26,000 client companies, took place in October 2006, four months after the implementation began. This was followed one month later by the release of the portal supporting 32,000 participating merchants, and thereafter by the portal for 1.3 million CartaSi card holders. A fourth portal for customer banks will be released later this year. There are currently about 400 shared services exposed on the BEA service bus, with continuous rapid growth in numbers. The SOA approach reduces the time and cost of implementation. It improves quality and enables significantly faster time to market.
