Business Challenge

Cox Communications is the fourth largest cable provider in the United States. The company offers an array of advanced digital video, high-speed Internet and telephony services over its own nationwide IP network. Cox serves over 5.9 million residential and commercial customers and has over 20,000 employees distributed among 20 organizations.

Each of Cox's 20 organizations had its own intranet site. This decentralized network required individual maintenance and hardware costs for each organization. Additionally, without a centralized framework communication between organizations was nearly impossible. Cox needed to reduce the costs of maintaining its separate networks while providing its employees with tools to improve business efficiency.

Solution

Using BEA's AquaLogic User Interaction (ALUI) Suite, Cox IT staff, along with BEA's professional services, created the myAxis portal. The myAxis portal provides a framework for application integration, a common user interface, and single sign on. Cox's business users receive targeted information with personalized content and have access to spaces for collaboration, information sharing, and knowledge management.

Numerous portlets were developed to increase the portals use and worker efficiency. Two commonly used portlets are the customer profile and myKronos portlets. Employees can access customer profile information from Peoplesoft through the portal. Additionally, the myKronos portlet is used for hourly worker time sheets. These tools help to automate routine and time consuming tasks.

Results

Cox realized immediate benefits from their portal in decreased hardware and application development costs. The portal also provides single sign-on and robust security that greatly improve access to and maintenance of the company's networks. BEA's out of the box integration with Peoplesoft, Oracle, Business Objects, and all web-based applications reduced the time needed for development and test. The myAxis portal serves as the basis for all communications throughout Cox Communication's organization.
